Public Spaces Protection Order Extension - Corby Town Centre - Consultation 2021
Overview
A Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) is a power under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, that allows a council to impose restrictions in particular areas to tackle nuisance or problem behaviour, within a defined public area.
North Northamptonshire Council is seeking your views and evidence on whether the PSPO for Corby Town Centre, which was granted in 2015, and renewed in 2018, should be renewed and extended for a further 3 years.
Since 14th December 2015, 18 Fixed Penalty Notices have been served, and there were 27 occasions where individuals have complied with the request from the authorised officer.
In addition, there is public awareness of the PSPO being in place and evidence of its effectiveness due to the proactive use of officer patrols, requests for compliance, progression of enforcement through formal actions and publication of such enforcement actions.
The PSPO being in place acts as a deterrent to reduce the likelihood of incidents occurring and supports action against those individuals who behave in an unacceptable manner.
Corby Town Centre due to its mix of retail, leisure and night-time economy use sees volumes of alcohol, substance misuse and begging related disorder.
In 2015 a PSPO was put in place to prohibit:
- Persons not to be in possession of open containers with alcohol in, within the area covered by the PSPO; and
- Persons not to drink, consume or take intoxicating substances within the area covered by the PSPO; and
- Persons not to act in a manner that causes alarm, harassment, or distress as a result of consuming alcohol or taking intoxicating substances; and
- Persons not to beg within the area covered by the PSPO.
Who can take part in this consultation?
This consultation is open for everyone, including residents, elected members, business, public agencies, and voluntary and community organisations.
In particular, we would like to hear the views of residents in and around the PSPO area to let us know whether the PSPO needs to continue.
What happens next?
Once the consultation is closed all feedback will be analysed and considered.
If there is supporting evidence to continue the PSPO in Corby Town Centre then the Order will remain in place for a further 3 years.
This consultation will run from Friday 19 November to midnight on Thursday 25 November 2021.
