Intervention Area Proposals 2: The Engine Room

Map showing the Engine Room Intervention Area

This area focuses on retail, movement and town centre activity.

Key ideas include:

  • Make Commercial Way safer and more inviting by reducing traffic and improving streets for walking
  • Reuse large buildings to support new services, education, and mixed uses, and improve the car park area to create a safer town centre gateway
  • Support a more diverse town centre with new food, leisure, creative spaces, small shops, workspaces, and homes to animate the area day and night

Multi-story Car Park and Bridge Link - Upgrade the car park with better security, EV charging, active travel facilities, while softening the exterior visual impact, with options to reuse unused space.

Sheep Street Improvements - Create wider, more accessible walking spaces and restore the historic market look through high‑quality shopfront designs.

Tithe Barn Area - Make the area safer and more welcoming with building improvements and well‑lit walking routes, and bring key buildings back into use for hotels, culture, workspaces, homes, and community offices.
