Intervention Area Proposals 1: The Civic Heartbeat

This area focuses on creating a central place for community life, activity and events.

Key ideas include:

  • Create a welcoming civic space for markets, play, art, and community events
  • Improve walking links between the bus station, college, shops, and nearby green spaces
  • Refresh and reuse buildings to restore historic streets and support the Market Place
  • Strengthen the town centre by improving the library and nearby uses to attract visitors and spending

Wellingborough Library and community hub - Refurbish and extend the library to enhance its hub role, create a new southern entrance and public space, and improve links to Whitehorse Yard.

Market Place civic space - Create a new central public space for Wellingborough with seating, greenery, play areas, and space for markets and community events.

Orient Way and alleyways - Improve public spaces, parking and taxis, and refresh alleyways to create safer, more welcoming routes between Sheep Street and the Market Place.

Market Square and Street - Create a tree-lined pedestrian route from Market Square to Market Place; remodel parts of the Market Street building to open vistas; improve Sheep Street public space.

College and bus interchange – Masterplan the Tresham College area and Church Street to better connect with the town centre, reduce congestion, and make it easier and more pleasant to walk around.

Orient Way gateway site – Potential future site for new homes, offices, or education linked to the college

Streetscape and Shopfronts - Make more space for walking, add greenery and seating, and restore historic shopfronts.
